In the beginning was the room under the chair. Then came the chair.
Together they form a synthesis and symbolize a concept of art and a concept of the self.
The space under the chair, the negative space, refers to a sculpture by Bruce Nauman, which he created based on a statement by Willem von de Kooning that goes something like this:
“When you paint a chair, you paint the space between the rungs”.
What is the space between the rungs?
Let`s connect it to another synthesis of the positive and the negative - Kierkegaard's idea of the positive third, a tangible concept of the self.
"I is something movable" creates a home for the chairs and the ideas they symbolize so that they can flow into our daily lives.
